“The Art of the Game”

Chess at Vineyard 48

While the exact time and place of the origin of chess is debated, most scholars believe it was developed in the sixth century AD. The earliest method of chess set production was carving the pieces from wood or stone. Today, the traditional chess set we are all familiar with is called the Staunton style. However, chess sets are often created from almost any material one can imagine and in as many styles as the most creative minds can conceive. Since each piece can be a miniature sculpture within itself, it is called “chess art.” The chess art gallery at Vineyard 48 displays a wide variety of exquisite chess sets from around the world. The sets make unique and beautiful gifts and are available in many price ranges.

Chess Collectors International was formed in 1984 for the study and promotion of the art and history of chess. CCI chess conventions have been held biannually at many locations around the world. Some of the members are recognized for their playing expertise, while others know very little about playing the game but enjoy the beauty of the sets and the joy of collecting them. Anyone interested in becoming a member of CCI can send an email to lichess@aol.com for further information. Dues are $50.00 per year, which includes regular newsletters, events and news of upcoming auctions. When calling, please mention the Vineyard 48 chess gallery.

Vineyard 48 also offers information on the history of the game, how to play chess, and other materials of interest. Chess tournaments are held on many weekends, and there are chess events throughout the year. Stop by and play a game or two. There are chess sets available for playing and groups are always welcome at Vineyard 48. For further information on the Vineyard 48 chess gallery or chess events please call Kenny Vaglio at 631-806-6464 or email him at kennyvag@aol.com. Let the games begin . . . it’s your move!
